10-Year Visit Visa

The £135 Home Office fee is only the starting point. VFS or TLScontact charges, priority processing, courier fees, currency conversion loss, and reapplication after refusal can turn a simple visit visa into a much more expensive mistake.

The £135 you are about to pay is non-refundable even if your visa is refused. For a family of four that is £540 gone before a single flight is booked. Many online fee guides stop at the headline Home Office fee. That is not the real cost most applicants pay.

Add VFS Global service charges, priority processing, courier fees, and currency conversion loss and the real total can exceed £1,200 per family, sometimes significantly more. This guide uses post-8 April 2026 Home Office rates and shows you the real cost before you commit.

Read this before you pay. It takes less time than losing £135.

Before you pay, five questions to answer first

  • Am I applying for the correct visa category for my exact purpose of visit?
  • Is my application strong enough that paying this non-refundable fee is a justified financial risk?
  • Have I verified the fee amount from the GOV.UK visa fees tool today, not from any third-party website?
  • Do I understand that if refused I lose this fee entirely and must pay the full fee again to reapply?
  • Do I know how the fee is paid, online via Access UK, in a single transaction, by credit or debit card, before biometrics can be booked?

Review your evidence before paying a non-refundable fee

KQ Solicitors can review your visit visa evidence before you commit the Home Office fee.

How Much Does a UK Visit Visa Cost in 2026?

The Home Office increased visitor visa fees on 8 April 2026. If any website still shows £127 as the standard 6-month fee, that information is outdated.

Always verify the current fee at the GOV.UK visa fees tool on the day you submit. The tool shows the exact local currency amount your card will be charged. Never rely on any third-party figure without cross-checking it live.

Visitors do not pay the Immigration Health Surcharge. The IHS applies to work, study, and settlement routes, not Standard Visitor applications.

The fee covers processing, not approval. You pay the same amount whether you are granted or refused.

The Real Total Cost, What You Actually Pay

The Home Office fee is the starting point. Most applicants pay 20 to 50 percent more once all charges are included.

Cost typeIncluded in GOV.UK feeUsually missed
Home Office visa feeYesNo
VFS or TLScontact appointment and service chargesNoYes
Courier return of passportNoYes
Document scanning at centreNoYes
Priority or Super Priority processingNoYes
Currency conversion loss on card paymentNoYes
Certified translation costsNoYes
Reapplication fee after refusalNoMajor hidden cost

Your real total cost: Home Office fee + VFS/TLScontact service fees + priority or super priority if chosen + courier if chosen + document scanning if needed + certified translation costs + currency conversion loss.

Pakistan single applicant: £135 Home Office fee + approximately £20 VFS service + approximately £8 courier = around £163 minimum realistic total.

India family of 4 with priority: £135 + £500 priority multiplied by 4 applicants = £2,540 before VFS extras. Realistic total can exceed £2,800.

USA premium centre: £135 Home Office fee + premium centre package may push the total above £1,000.

Do You Actually Need a Visa or Just an ETA, The £115 Mistake

Non-visa nationals who pay £135 for a visitor visa when they only need a £20 ETA have made a £115 mistake per person. This catches applicants from the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and most EU member states.

Traveller typeWhat you needFee
Visa nationals, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Ghana and othersStandard Visitor visa£135
Non-visa nationals, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, most EU nationalsElectronic Travel Authorisation£20
British or Irish citizens, or people with valid UK immigration permissionUsually no ETA or visitor visa required£0

An ETA is not a visa on arrival. It must be obtained before boarding. It costs £20, is valid for 2 years or until the passport expires, and allows multiple visits of up to 6 months each.

Important exception: Even if you are a non-visa national, you still need a Marriage and Civil Partnership Visitor visa if you are coming to the UK specifically to marry, register a civil partnership, or give notice of marriage. An ETA is not sufficient for this purpose.

Caseworker Insight: The ETA system shifts compliance to the point of departure. The practical risk is being unable to board your flight, not being turned away on arrival.

The Hidden Cost Trap Most Families Miss, Children’s Long-Term Visas Expire Early

If your child is under 18 when you apply, their long-term Standard Visitor visa will only remain valid until 6 months after their 18th birthday. There is no refund for unused validity.

A family paying £1,128 for a 10-year visa for a 14-year-old may see it expire at 18 years and 6 months. Same fee. Less than half the validity.

Child's age at applicationVisa applied forActual validityFee paidValue

17 years old2-year Standard VisitorAbout 1.5 years£506Poor
17 years old6-month Standard Visitor6 months£135Fair, matches actual need

No refund: There is no refund if the visa expires early due to the under-18 rule or if circumstances change and the visa goes unused after payment.

Caseworker Insight: A caseworker can also grant a shorter duration visa than applied for where residual doubts remain about credibility. An applicant paying £1,128 for a 10-year visa may receive a shorter visa at the same fee with no refund.

How Much Is a Long-Term UK Visitor Visa and Is It Actually Worth the Cost?

Every competitor frames long-term visa value as cost per year. That framing is misleading. Most people do not visit every year for the full validity period.

Break-even calculation

DurationFeeBreak-even visitsReal value
6-month Standard Visitor£135 per applicationNot applicablePay per visit
2-year Standard Visitor£5064 visits in 2 yearsConvenience only below 4 visits
5-year Standard Visitor£903About 7 visits in 5 yearsSaves money only at high visit frequency
10-year Standard Visitor£1,128About 9 visits in 10 yearsGenuine saving at 9 or more visits

The 10-year visa is only cheaper if you actually visit around nine times. Otherwise it is an expensive convenience.

Caseworker Insight: Paying a higher fee does not shift the evidential burden in the applicant's favour. A £1,128 application with weak home ties is refused on the same basis as a £135 application with the same weakness. The evidence is everything.

VFS Global and TLScontact, Hidden Fees After You Pay

This is the single biggest source of post-payment shock for UK visa applicants. VFS Global charges do not appear during the GOV.UK payment stage. They appear when you book your biometric appointment, after the visa fee is already paid and non-refundable.

VFS Global operates many UK visa application centres outside the UK on behalf of the Home Office. TLScontact is the alternative commercial partner in several countries. Their charges are separate from the GOV.UK visa fee.

The mandatory centre charge, what nobody tells you

Certain VFS centres operate on a User Pays or premium-only basis. This means you must pay a mandatory centre fee simply to submit biometrics, regardless of whether you choose optional services.

Cost Warning: VFS and TLScontact charges are separate commercial partner charges. Refunds and complaints about those services are handled through the relevant commercial partner's process, not through UKVI.

⚠ Common Online Mistake

Most visa fee guides list the GOV.UK fee and stop there. The VFS mandatory centre fee can appear only after the GOV.UK payment is committed.

How Much Does a UK Visit Visa Cost From Pakistan, India, Nigeria, and the USA?

Currency disclaimer: Approximate rates only. The Home Office charges in GBP using its conversion mechanism and your card provider may add foreign transaction fees. Treat these figures as planning estimates, not final payable amounts.

What Is the Priority Visa Fee and Does It Improve Your Chances of Approval?

Priority processing does not improve your chances of being approved. It speeds up the timeline. Nothing else.

Priority processing buys speed, not sympathy. The Priority Visa service adds £500. The Super Priority Visa service adds £1,000 and is available at limited locations only.

What priority processing actually costs on a weak application

An applicant has a non-refundable flight booked in three weeks. They pay £500 for priority processing. The application includes unexplained large deposits. Priority works exactly as advertised, they receive a refusal quickly. The visa fee is gone, the priority fee is gone, and the flight may also be lost.

Priority did not cause the refusal. It accelerated the financial damage.

Priority fee refund rules

The priority service fee may be refunded if UKVI misses the advertised timeline, but this is not automatic. You must contact UKVI directly to request it. The standard visa fee is not refunded because the application was refused.

Caseworker Insight: A strong application gets a fast decision either way. A weak application gets a fast refusal on priority, and a slower refusal on standard.

Are UK Visit Visa Fees Refundable If My Application Is Refused?

No. The visa fee is non-refundable once your application has been processed. The fee covers processing, not the outcome.

The £135 fee is not a deposit. It is the price of having your application assessed, and you pay it regardless of the ending.

No ordinary right of appeal, read this before you pay

For most Standard Visitor visa refusals there is no ordinary right of appeal and Administrative Review is not normally available. The usual option is to reapply with a strengthened application, paying the full fee again. In cases of clear legal error, Judicial Review may be considered, but it is technical and expensive.

What a refused family application actually costs

A family of four applies for UK visit visas and pays £540. If refused, there is no refund. To reapply, each family member must pay again, another £540.

Refused family applicationCost
First application, family of 4£540
Reapplication, family of 4£540
Priority processing, first attempt only£2,000 additional
Total before a single flight is booked£1,080 minimum, £3,080 with priority on first attempt

Caseworker Insight: The fee covers processing, not outcome. The way to protect your money is to ensure the evidence is stronger than the caseworker's doubt before you pay.

Previous refusal or weak evidence?

If your application involves a previous refusal, unexplained deposits, weak home ties or urgent travel, KQ Solicitors can review the evidence before you commit another non-refundable fee.

UK Visitor Visa Categories and Fees, Choosing the Right Route

Paying the wrong category is not just a financial error, it is an eligibility failure. The fee is non-refundable regardless of which category you choose.

Visa typeFeeMaximum stayWho needs thisCommon mistake
Standard Visitor£1356 months per entryTourism, family visits, business meetings, short courses up to 6 monthsApplying when intending to marry in the UK
Electronic Travel Authorisation£202 years, multiple visits up to 6 months eachNon-visa nationalsPaying £135 when only an ETA is needed
Long-term Standard Visitor£506, £903 or £1,1286 months per entryFrequent visitors who will break even on visit frequencyPaying for a long-term visa for a child without checking the expiry rule

The marriage visitor mistake

The Standard Visitor category does not cover marriage, registering a civil partnership, or giving notice of marriage. If you are coming to the UK to marry, you need a Marriage and Civil Partnership Visitor visa applied for specifically in advance.

The PPE category mistake

The Permitted Paid Engagement must be completed within 1 month of arrival, not within 1 month of the visa being granted. An applicant who arrives in month five and attempts the engagement has already missed the permitted period.

Category error warning: If you are uncertain which category applies to your purpose of visit, take advice before paying. The fee is non-refundable.

How to Reduce the Cost of Your UK Visit Visa Application

The only cost reduction that matters is avoiding refusal. A refusal costs the full fee. Reapplication costs the full fee again.

  1. Check whether you need a visa or just an ETA. Potential saving: £115 per applicant.
  2. Prepare your documents thoroughly before applying. Missing evidence can lead to refusal and another full fee.
  3. Upload documents yourself before your appointment. This can avoid counter scanning fees.
  4. Use a card with zero foreign transaction fees. This may reduce card provider currency charges.
  5. Avoid priority unless genuinely necessary. Standard processing saves £500 to £1,000 versus priority or super priority.
  6. Collect your passport in person where practical. This can save courier charges.

Caseworker Insight: There is no routine request for further documents stage. The caseworker assesses what was submitted and decides on that basis.

What Happens If I Pay the Wrong Visa Fee or Apply Under the Wrong Category?

Paying the wrong fee or wrong category does not give you any additional right to do what you intended. The fee is non-refundable regardless of the mistake.

Wrong fee amount

If you pay the wrong amount your application may be rejected as invalid. Underpayment means the application is not processed. You must reapply and pay the correct fee in full.

Wrong category

If you apply under the wrong category, Standard Visitor when you needed a Marriage Visitor visa, for example, the application is assessed under the category you chose. Your intention can trigger refusal at the application stage or removal at the border.

Before: “I am visiting the UK to attend my partner's family events and spend time together.”

After refusal: “The applicant's stated purpose includes activities not permitted under the Standard Visitor route. The application is refused.”

Caseworker Insight: Wrong-category applications are identified at the first assessment stage. There is no opportunity to correct the category after submission.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The fee is non-refundable once your application has been processed regardless of outcome. The fee covers processing, not the result. If you cancel through your GOV.UK account before attending your biometric appointment, a refund may be paid if eligible.

The Home Office fee is £135, approximately PKR 47,000 to 49,000 depending on the exchange rate at the time of payment. VFS service charges and courier fees may add approximately PKR 7,000 to 11,000 per applicant. Verify current figures from the GOV.UK fees tool and VFS Pakistan before applying.

Yes. Children pay the same fee as adults. The 6-month Standard Visitor visa is £135 per child. However, long-term visas for children under 18 expire 6 months after their 18th birthday with no refund for unused validity.

The realistic minimum total for a standard 6-month application is approximately £160 to £200 per applicant in many countries once VFS service fees and courier are included. This rises significantly with priority processing or premium-only centres.

Yes, if eligible. If you cancel through your GOV.UK account before attending your biometric appointment, the fee is usually refundable. Once biometrics have been submitted, the fee is committed and no refund is normally available.

No. Standard Visitor applicants do not pay the Immigration Health Surcharge. NHS treatment during your visit may still be chargeable depending on your circumstances and any reciprocal healthcare arrangements.

Pay the fee once. Pay it right. Or pay it twice.

If your application involves a previous refusal, unexplained deposits, weak home ties, urgent travel, or a long-term visa for a child, KQ Solicitors can review the evidence before you commit a non-refundable fee.
